Queens Park Rangers received a blow when they learnt that striker Andy Johnson will miss the majority of the Barclays Premier League season after damaging a cruciate ligament in a knee against Chelsea.
The 31-year-old former Everton and Fulham forward sustained the injury during the first half of the 0-0 draw at Loftus Road on Saturday.
"Andy Johnson suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Chelsea and is likely to be sidelined for the majority of the season," the club said on their official website.
Johnson joined QPR from Fulham on a free transfer in June and had featured in three of the club’s four opening Barclays Premier League matches.
“You need players like AJ in the squad because they give so much,” QPR manager Mark Hughes said after the match.
There was further bad news from the match for Hughes as full-back Fabio Da Silva, who is on loan from Manchester United, and central defender Anton Ferdinand suffered hamstring injuries that are likely to keep them on the sidelines for a minimum of two weeks.
Fabio was replaced by Nedum Onuoha in the 21st minute while Ferdinand completed the match.
QPR go in search of their first victory of the new campaign when they take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
